The competition section
La Semaine de la Critique launches in Durban before travelling to Cape Town and Johannesburg in late July.
La Semaine de la Critique in South Africa features film screenings, a master class with visiting filmmaker Boris Lojkine in Durban and filmmaker round tables in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Since its inception in 1962, the annual Cannes’ La Semaine de la Critique has featured the work of first and second time feature filmmakers from across the world, including Ken Loach, Wong Kar-Wai and Alejandro González Iñarritu.
La Semaine de la Critique in South Africa is part of a broader initiative by Urucu Media, supported by the French Institute of South Africa, to promote unique cinematic voices and innovation. In addition to audiences, the initiative targets the local filmmaking community through REALNESS – a three-month screenwriters’ residency for first and second time feature directors.
